O is for Occult |
“oc·cult [əˈkəlt] n. Occult practices or techniques: a student of the occult. v. To conceal or cause to disappear from view. adj. Of, relating to, or dealing with supernatural influences, agencies, or phenomena.
Synonyms: n: supernatural, v: eclipse, adj: mystic, orphic, mysterious, mystical, secret
Etymology: adj: 1530s, “secret, not divulged,” from Middle French occulte and directly from Latin occultus “hidden, concealed, secret,” past participle of occulere “cover over, conceal,” from ob “over” (see ob-) + a verb related to celare “to hide,” from PIE root *kel- “to hide” (see cell). Meaning “not apprehended by the mind, beyond the range of understanding” is from 1540s. The association with the supernatural sciences (magic, alchemy, astrology, etc.) dates from 1630s.
Isn’t that one interesting? To be perfectly honest, I had no idea it could also be a verb.”
Me either! So I learned something from this post.

Hi Lee – oh dear I was relying on everyone else .. no such luck then – I'ma movin' on … to see who the clever blogger is to blog us all down a year later .. you deserve a Cadbury's Chocolate Medal for this one – Happy Easter .. Hilary
I'm going to occult my laundry,
I don't know, but the occult is fascinating.
It would be cheating if I claimed to know the answer before I saw two others agree. Now I don't need a crystal ball although I haven't been a good blog reader due to moving, my cat going missing for 5 weeks in freezing weather, nursing him back to health, me learning how to care for chickens (and having 2 stolen by a fox or some occult occurrence) and etc… You probably don't want to know what occult means to me, but I'm a reformed Clincal Lab Scientist who used to have to check for occult blood in . . .yuck. You shouldn't need a crystal ball to know I'm so much happier as a writer and editor.
Matthew MacNish! I read this last year… on "The Quintessentially Questionable Query Experiment"!! 🙂
Random Musings from the KristenHead — O is for Opposite Brain (and Opal)
I recall a blogger I used to share comments with…. I can't recall her name or blog title but she had spooky dolls.
I can't even make a guess. Looks like you've stumped us on this one.
And I thought this one would be easy. So hard to tell.
I know this! I know this! It's my old friend and faithful companion Dictionary.Com! We've spent many a long evening together. (Whew. Thank goodness I finally got one. With everyone else doing so well every day, I was starting to feel occulted.)
You're using new knowledge. I'm so impressed. I'll bet your teachers adored you, Lexa! I see The Cat tallying points right now.
I guess occult as a verb is a synonym of eclipse, in the astronomical sense? Certainly not used often!
Never have seen it used as a verb, so this was news to me.
What a cool thing you're doing. Not that I'd be any good at it. If you gave me hints about what I did last year I probably wouldn't even recognize it. My poor old memory.

I had to write them down to remember. The brain tries, but sometimes it lets me down.
I didn't know it could be used as a verb either!
Yay! Everybody's learning something new.
I think this blogger has occulted himself. (heehee)
Laughing, Southpaw. Thanks for the chuckle.
I haven't a clue, but it looks like I'm not the only one! You are being entirely too occultic (?) with this one. That's my witticism and I'm sticking to it.
Best that you do. I love it. The Cat is giving one paw up!
I didn't know it could be a verb either! How cool 😀
No idea. Never thought of this word as a verb. Now I'll have to create a reason to use it. 🙂

JE Fritz is always talking about the etymology of words, but somehow I don't think that's who you're talking about. I guess you could be…
True Heroes from A to Z
I don't have a clue who did this theme last year.
Interesting post…didn't know occult could be a verb, either!
Got me on this one, too. Excuse me while I go dust off my crystal ball and find the answer.
I did not know that either. You really do learn something new every day! 🙂
Cool ! Enjoyed this post 🙂
Uh oh. This one has me stumped!
Got me on this one, Lee…
Occult is such a fascinating subject… I'd love to write a novel with some sort of occult running through it!
Do it, Michael. It would be great.
umm, no guesses here.
Interesting. No one's getting this.
Oh, I know…wait *looks for answer in crystal ball*…I lost it. *makes more coffee, shakes ball*

That ball lets us down when we need it the most, doesn't it?
No idea. Totally blank on this one…
I'm stumping the experts on this one.
*bursts out laughing*
…and I'm off to have some delicious coffee… maybe it will help unclog the brain… 🙂
I have no clue (so what else is new?). I'm just happy to be back after missing a couple days. I didn't want you to think I took my prize and ditched you. 🙂
As the teens would say, LOL!
Oops, got nothing either. But now I want to use occult as a verb!
Hi Nick! Thanks for stopping in. No guess, heh? Well, it has been a year.
That is an interesting thing to learn, yet I must say that I do not know who this blogger is *holds head low in shame*
No shame, Angela. I think this one is a toughy.
You got me on that one – bummer!
Oh, and sorry Gary.
How did this happen? We had a plot, er, plan all set and everything. Still, here you are first! Where are you Gary?
"O" is for "Oops!" Due to circumstances beyond my control, the devious conspiracy plot, um, the getting here first, got screwed up because I cannot lie, I dozed off.
Next time, lurking Ninja, next time!
"The Quintessentially Questionable Query Experiment
A clumsy attempt at making some sense of the sinister submission process, a blog by Matthew MacNish" ?
O and sorry about not getting here sooner. Back to sleep…..
As always, your starstruckest fan,
Gary!
There's always Z! Maybe by that time we'll have our strategy down pat.
