O is for Occult

Mystery Blogger O’s 2013 theme: “Vocabulary facts from A to Z.”
 Occult

“oc·cult [əˈkəlt] n. Occult practices or techniques: a student of the occult. v. To conceal or cause to disappear from view. adj. Of, relating to, or dealing with supernatural influences, agencies, or phenomena.

Synonyms: n: supernatural, v: eclipse, adj: mystic, orphic, mysterious, mystical, secret

Etymology: adj: 1530s, “secret, not divulged,” from Middle French occulte and directly from Latin occultus “hidden, concealed, secret,” past participle of occulere “cover over, conceal,” from ob “over” (see ob-) + a verb related to celare “to hide,” from PIE root *kel- “to hide” (see cell). Meaning “not apprehended by the mind, beyond the range of understanding” is from 1540s. The association with the supernatural sciences (magic, alchemy, astrology, etc.) dates from 1630s.

  5. It would be cheating if I claimed to know the answer before I saw two others agree. Now I don't need a crystal ball although I haven't been a good blog reader due to moving, my cat going missing for 5 weeks in freezing weather, nursing him back to health, me learning how to care for chickens (and having 2 stolen by a fox or some occult occurrence) and etc… You probably don't want to know what occult means to me, but I'm a reformed Clincal Lab Scientist who used to have to check for occult blood in . . .yuck. You shouldn't need a crystal ball to know I'm so much happier as a writer and editor.

    • "O" is for "Oops!" Due to circumstances beyond my control, the devious conspiracy plot, um, the getting here first, got screwed up because I cannot lie, I dozed off.
