My theme this year is Burma AKA Myanmar. I used to live in Laos, so this was a return to Southeast Asia that I looked forward to. I spent a little over three weeks exploring this country, learning a bit about its culture: its history, religion, and language. I thought others might enjoy some of what I learned and see some of what I saw.

In an old British Colonial Town, the Horse Carriage is still the Taxi |
I’m the world’s worse movie maker. Well the horse carriage was bouncing, so I kept sliding out. Almost tumbled onto the ground a couple of times, so I had to hold on to the carriage with one hand and use the other one to point and shoot. It was starting to rain and the driver kept handing me an umbrella. “Sorry, fella but I’m out of hands here!”
Answers to G: What do you know about botanical gardens in Burma?
F 1. Burma can boast several amazing national gardens similar to PyinOoLwin. (There are several national parks, sanctuaries and reserves, but I could only find one botanical garden.)
F 2. Botanical gardens are totally under government control. (There are still government links ($$$), but the garden is now mostly controlled by a private company.)
NOW what do you know about the carriages of Burma?
T/F 1. Hackney carriages have been subject to government licensing at least as far back as 1950.
T/F 2. Hackney-carriage means small vehicle in Burma.
Answers tomorrow.

I've never been on a carriage ride, but would like to go on one.
Your little movie is still fun to watch. I love the finger at the end π
the picture of the first carriage is really pretty taxi. I love all the colors.

I liked the video, it was real and gave me a quick understanding that your were talking about real horse carriages.
I think I'd better quit while I'm ahead on your quizzes! Sorry it rained on your carriage ride. It still looked pretty though.
Julie
Take me on one!! Promise? Just kidding.
I'll say 1 T ,2 F.
I've ridden in a few of these in my time.
I just learned the whole "hackney" term a week or two ago. I was looking for a fun fact for my chapter book and I did one on the history of school buses. The "kid hacks" were the first school buses (horse-drawn).
I would love to go for a ride in this. Boy I failed on the last quiz. hahahaaa-OK so I say True to the first and false to the second. Tomorrow we shall see if I got both right (it has to happen once right?)
Umm, that should be Charleston, SC. My fingers can't spell. π
Carriages are so much fun. I rode in one in Charleston, CA. Wouldn't want it to be my permanent means of transportation. π
My children have always enjoyed the horse drawn carriages in Central Park NYC and Amish Country!
Looks like a bone shaker but very fun.
That's interesting they still use horse carriages!!
How fun. Over on Mackinaw Island, they still do carriages because there's no motorized vehicles allowed on the island.
Hi Lee – how lovely you were able to see the horses, and then share a ride with them in the carriage ..
I've no idea re your questions this time! H for Hopeless .. Cheers Hilary
Horse carriages seem romantic … but when I've ridden in them, they were quite stinky. π I still love the idea of them though!
Love the video!
Yvonne
I'd say both of those are true.
I had a similar experience in the Gilies (islands that are part of Lombok). There were no cars allowed on the island–only horses and bicycles. The "carriages" weren't nearly as nice, though, and as the cart swung madly from side to side, I was sure I was going to thrown out and trampled.
It was a memorable experience, that's for sure. π
I loved the photo of that first taxi, and the video wasn't that shaky! Fun to hear your voice… I guess I'd have to say true to both questions? Lisa, co-host AtoZ 2015, @ http://www.lisabuiecollard.com
Oh my gosh how cool is that!! That carriage is gorgeous. I guess they need to come up with a seatbelt on that. Very interesting journey for sure. I've never been farther than Canada and Mexico as far as out of the country.
Stopping by from A to Z challenge.
Still not scoring better than 50%. I'm going to say both false for tomorrow.
I wonder if a hackney is related to a jitney? π
Horses are my favorite! My sister-in-law lives near Chicago and has a Clydesdale horse farm. They even bought a white carriage.
Very nice. Love to ride in a horse drawn carriage.
I grew up in Michigan and the Amish where about 90 minutes south across the border into Indiana. They'd have to get their carriages across major highways with semis and lots of traffic. I'd shudder every time I heard the crack of the whip and the horse would bolt through traffic with a large family in the carriage.
Wow, I love gardens so this trip sounds amazing!!!! OMG!
I know they have floating gardens – which I thought were really cool!
And wow – horse and carriage taxis – interesting. I don't think I would enjoy a ride that bumpy for very long.
Falling out of a carriage would not have been fun! The last time I was in a horse drawn carriage was on our 10 anniversary when we had a second honeymoon in Victoria, BC … we had to have blankets because it was cold π

I love carriage rides for short periods of travel. Couldn't imagine a long jaunt in one.
Enjoy the post very much, though I have never been on a horse or a carriage.
Thanks for sharing.
Yvonne.
I went on a horse and carriage ride when I visited Bruges a couple of years ago, it was fantastic π
I imagine it's a really rough ride!
That would be so much fun, even with all the bouncing!
