Every month, we announce a question that members can answer in their IWSG post. These questions may prompt you to share advice, insight, a personal experience or story. Include your answer to the question in your IWSG post or let it inspire your post if you are struggling with something to say.

June 3 question - Writers have secrets! What are one or two of yours, something readers would never know from your work?

We have some truly awesome co-hosts today!

Pat Garcia, J.Q. Rose, Olga Godim, and Natalie Aguirre!

I’m not sure this qualifies as a secret, but I haven’t told anyone about it before now, so maybe it is. Of course, once I’ve published this post, poof goes the secret part. Anyway, here it is.

I’m trying my darnedest to keep writing and stay sane just like everybody else. It’s not easy to write books at any time, at least not for me. But then the heavy lifting called promotion starts, doesn’t it? I’ve been so close to stopping so many times, especially these last two years. Just when I have my fingers hovering over the keys to delete my accounts and shut down all my social media, I get a bit of encouragement from other writers and even some of my readers. So another day passes and I write a few more words, and then the First Wednesday comes…Well you can see where I’m going.

What I’ve discovered is that when I lend a hand to other authors it lifts me out of the doldrum, so I’ve been racking my brain to think of other ways I can help besides buy, read, and review books. I decided more exposure is always good, so I sent out a few emails, announcing an offer to authors on my EMAIL CONNECT. Several responded to my question: “What are you doing this shelter-in place fiasco?” Here’s what some of them sent to me:

Mateo's Law by Sandra Cox

This modern day shape-shifting tale is available on AMAZON. Buy yours today.

Sandra Cox says, “I garden. It sustains me and my flowers feed my spirit.”
About Us by Elizabeth Seckman

This romantic story is a Free Book on AMAZON Get your free copy today.

Elizabeth Seckman wrote, “My stay sane strategy? When life gets tough, it’s best to stay busy. I made myself a mini bucket list of all the things I could do while quarantined. From cleaning out my closets to keeping a journal about this bizarre turn of life events, there is more on my list than I could ever finish, so no time to worry.”
Death by Library by Rebecca Douglass

Get your copy of this Cozy Mystery on AMAZON

Rebecca Douglass sent this: “I’m spending more time than ever exercising, which is good (but getting more challenging as it’s starting to get hot here). One average, close to 2 hours/day. Finding and completing little projects help me cope, but the best thing is when we manage to lure our sons out of their rooms and enjoy some actual family conversations!

It’s not patience I’ve run out of—it’s focus. Trying hard to recover some and get on with those edits, but it’s hard. It’s always hard, but it’s harder this time.”

Lumber of the Kuweakunks by J. Lennie Dorner

Buy this Fantasy/Mystery on Smashwords.

J. Lenni Dorner: “I am surviving the quarantine by focusing on what l CAN do. I’ve dealt with impossible situations before, so it isn’t having the same impact on me that it is on my spouse and friends. The most challenging part is saying good-bye to those I’ve lost during and because of this (two so far, another not looking good, and some who I can’t get a hold of so I don’t know.)”
Murder, Just Because by Yolanda Renee

This Detective Quaid Mystery is available at Amazon, Barnes & Nobel, and Smashwords. Get your next book in the series now!

Yolanda Renee says, “As an introvert, isolation isn’t terribly hard. I’ve always enjoyed my alone time. However, watching the daily death count and not being able to visit my sons is heartbreaking. Still, I’ve followed through on my goals. It’s spring, so reorganizing and redecorating has kept me busy. Launching my latest book, writing the next one, and working on several short stories have kept me busy. But for some reason, I also read every piece of mail, even the junk mail, and I have a tendency to cry at the drop of a hat.

As I watch the beachgoers get their party on, I wonder what hotspot they’ve escaped from. So, I avoid crowds and wear my mask in the elevator when going to the laundry room.

My deepest desire is to hug my boys.

Only my followers get copies because I’ve never sent it out for publication. My next “issue” is going to have something I think is exciting for any Indie writer.

December’s First Wednesday & Holiday Treats

December 4, 2019 By C. Lee McKenzie

The last post of 2019 is rather nostalgic for me. So much has happened in these 365 days-some wonderful, some not so wonderful. This is my first full year living alone, and there were times when I thought, “Nope! Can’t do this.” And then, I did.

Traveling helped. I revisited Athens, and had my own Odyessy around the Greek Islands. Morocco was next, and I learned so much about this fascinating part of the world.

Not Guilty by C. Lee McKenzie

Kindle Cover

Not Guilty, my fifth contemporary/realistic novel was published. I didn’t think I was going to make it, actually. The acceptance from the publisher came about a week before I left for Morocco, and I didn’t have a clue how I was going be on the road and get ready to launch a book. Fortunately, I was smart enough to know I couldn’t do it alone and hired MC Book Tours. They did a great job, and the launch went off without a hitch.

The book’s out to good REVIEWS, of course, I could use more, but that’s a given. I wish readers understood how important reviewing really is these days. Some do, but many do not!.

And now to the Wednesday business! Be sure to check us out on Twitter. Remember the next Twitter Pitch is JANUARY 15! Our Twitter handle is @TheIWSG and hashtag is #IWSGPit.

DUE TO NEW YEAR’S DAY FALLING ON A WEDNESDAY, WE WILL BE POSTING JANUARY 8 RATHER THAN JANUARY 1!

Every month, we announce a question that members can answer in their IWSG post. These questions may prompt you to share advice, insight, a personal experience or story. Include your answer to the question in your IWSG post or let it inspire your post if you are struggling with something to say. The co-hosts for the December 4 posting of the IWSG areTonja Drecker, Beverly Stowe McClure, Nicki Elson, Fundy Blue, and Tyrean Martinson!

Remember, the question is optional!

December 4 question - Let’s play a game. Imagine. Role-play. How would you describe your future writer self, your life and what it looks and feels like if you were living the dream? Or if you are already there, what does it look and feel like? Tell the rest of us. What would you change or improve?

I have three more stories that I would like to see published. One is with my agent, one is sitting on my C-Drive while I decide how to manage it, and one is in draft form and out to a beta reader. If these books make their way into the world, I’m thinking it’s time to take more hikes, do more traveling, and maybe attend to all of those chores I’ve put off while laying down one word after another.

IWSG Anthology Contest 2019

Now’s the time for those Holiday Treats-the winners of the anthology contest. Here they are! Congratulations to all of them! The stories are awesome.

The First Spring Wednesday

April 3, 2019 By C. Lee McKenzie

Lancaster in Bloom

I know it’s spring when I can’t sit for more than three minutes in front of the computer, I pace, stopping at the window to stare at the daffodils, the poppies, and the wild plums all pink with flowers. Color is everywhere out there, and I’m itching to enjoy it up close. However, business first, so here’s my First Wednesday post for April and a great spring hello to everyone.

And I’ve started spring off with an INTERVIEW. The BOOK SAGE, a reviewer, asked me make an appearance on his blog. Of course, I said YES! Please stop by and say hello.

The awesome co-hosts for the April 3 posting of the IWSG are some of my favorite people! Please go say hi to them and thank them for hosting.
J.H. Moncrieff, Natalie Aguirre, Patsy Collins, and Chemist Ken!

Remember, the question is optional!

If you could use a wish to help you write just ONE scene/chapter of your book, which one would it be? (examples: fight scene / first kiss scene / death scene / chase scene / first chapter / middle chapter / end chapter, etc.)

I’d wish for a solid and non-saggy middle chapter-maybe I’d push my luck and ask for a few of those. For me the middle of the book is a challenge. I’ve set up the story and I usually know how I’m going to end it. It’s that long bridge between that I do battle with to keep the pace up and the characters at their charismatic best. My greatest worry is the middle chapters will be as sad as an old mattress. Of course, wishing won’t prevent saggy-ness from happening; only long hours of weary fingers on the keyboard and longer ones deleting and rewriting with those same weary fingers will do that.

Here’s my wish! Non-saggy middle chapters.

Rescuing Mara’s Father kept me reading.

From my Review: When Mara’s father is abducted by an evil queen, she ignores all of her father’s wishes for her to hide and stay safe to go in search of him. Set in a distant future and a fictional galaxy, Rescuing Mara’s Father is a fast-paced science fiction adventure with unexpected twists up to the very end. You’ll enjoy the read.

As usual there are things happening here at #IWSG. Our latest excitement is our affiliation with DIY MFA so we can bring you great programs for writers. This is actually my excuse for not visiting blogs early this month. I’m in a training session today. But I’ll be around to say hi and catch up soon.

Here’s a podcast that you should sample. It’s with David Morrell who is just brilliant. Then there’s one with David Corbett that’s very like a master class on writing characters based on historical figures. There are many more, so don’t touch that dial. There’s going to be something for everybody.

IWSG Anthology Contest 2019

And another IWSG Anthology Contest is on the horizon. We’ll announce the theme next month, but start thinking about Middle Grade Adventure/Fantasy stories you’d like to write. You’ll have from May 1-September 4 to enter.

The First First Wednesday

January 2, 2019 By C. Lee McKenzie

Didn’t we just post the Last First Wednesday of 2018? Yes. So now we get to start fresh with the First First Wednesday of 2019. Happy New Year and read on to find out what a great start we have!

The awesome co-hosts for the January 2 posting of the IWSG are Patricia Lynne, Lisa Buie-Collard, Kim Lajevardi, and Fundy Blue! The question of the month is “What are your favorite and least favorite questions as an author?”

My FAVORITE QUESTIONS:
Do you read your book reviews? How do you deal with bad or good ones?
Ans: Sometimes. I like to steal some of the good ones for my own uses. I read both good and bad and try to learn from each. My one caveat is that they must be well-written. Poor grammar or sloppy writing in either the good ones or the bad ones turn me off, and I ignore them. I love it when there are big differences in how readers react to what I’ve written.

My LEAST FAVORITE QUESTION:
What is your advice for writers?
Ans: I have absolutely no advice. If someone wants advice they should go to an expert in writing/publishing, which I’m not.
What is your writing process?
Ans: My most current one is that I don’t have a process. If I did, I’d be ever so grateful. What I have are a lot of accidents that produce stories.

Quote of the Month: This seems like a good quote since book reviews often reveal very different thoughts about the same work, so we should love tha. “Where all think alike, no one thinks very much.” Walter Lippmann, Journalist
