I’ll be giving a shout out to Tick Tock: A Stitch In Crime anthology each week this March, and here’s my second Featured Author, Tara Tyler and her story, Reset.
My Review: Reset is a time travel story in which an old man finds a young girl with the “energy” necessary to propel him back in time. He’s waited for years to make this journey and change an event that forever altered his life and the life of everyone in his family. A well-told story with an unexpected end that you’ll think about for a while. Perhaps the past should remain exactly that.
Now here’s Tara.
Remember in English class when the teacher asked you what the theme of a book was? I used to dread that!
When I write a story, I don’t usually have a theme in mind. Then when it’s written and I have to talk about it, I realize there was one hidden in it all along! And though RESET is a short story, it has three themes:
Here’s the snapshot of RESET:
Twelve-year-old Casey has no time for her quirky family.
Mr. Zander has been searching for the perfect specimen to save his.
When Casey walks into Mr. Zander’s clock repair shop, he sees her as a prime contender and coerces her to help him. Hopefully, the machine will work this time.
I’m excited to read the rest of the stories in the TICK TOCK, A STITCH IN CRIME anthology. Thanks for having me over, Lee. Always a treat to be featured here!

I love time travel stories, don’t you? Here’s a T/F Quiz about other stories with this theme.
1. The classic tale, The Time Machine, was written in 1930.
2. A Wrinkle in Time caused a bidding war among publishers when L’Engle submitted it.
3. It was Scott Turow’s endorsement of The Time Traveler’s Wife on The Today Show that kickstarted that book’s climb up the charts.

Quote of the Week: “Time travel used to be thought of as just science fiction, but Einstein’s general theory of relativity allows for the possibility that we could warp space-time so much that you could go off in a rocket and return before you set out.” Stephen Hawking
Sounds like a thrilling story!
Ooh, I LOVE Time Travel stories!!! This one sounds interesting!

Time travel is one of my favorite genres, but it can also be pretty messed up if not done right. I want to believe what is somewhat hard to believe from the outset and if logic is not there then I might not be for long either unless the writing and the story is exceptional.
As for themes, I don’t particularly look for them. In literature classes or studies I think a stretch is sometimes made to come up with a theme that I’m not sure the writer ever even thought about during the process of coming up with the story.

thanks so much for the great comments!
can’t believe the news of Stephen Hawking =(
and Thomas, yes, Hidden Figures was an awesome throwback math movie!
I have yet to read Wrinkle in Time. I’ll have to put it on my list.
Time travel is always one of those tricky topics. It’s great to see stories that really work out!
Wow – the Hawking quote hit home hard today – such a great man
LOVED Tara’s story – RESET has a great main character and the story pulls you right in! 🙂
I do love a good time travel story.
The Hawking quote hits me differently today…
Think it’s so cool you’re featuring each author–have I mentioned that yet?
I’ve never been a huge fan of time travel, but done well, it makes for a compelling story. I enjoyed the first Outlander book, for instance. Found The Time Machine pretty damn disturbing.
Nice to see Tara’s story featured. Time travel offers so many opportunities for conflict and an exciting plot. I recall my husband and kids watching the old film The Time Machine years ago. Have a great rest of the week! 🙂
I like your quote on time. What really blows my mind is now they can prove in experiments that future states of particles alter past states of particles – so the future literally can alter the past. No joke:)
I love a good time travel adventure. A Wrinkle in Time was my favorite book when I was in 5th grade. I read The Time Traveler’s Wife for book club and LOVED it- but most of my book club didn’t love it.
Wonderful to hear from Tara. Her short story sound intriguing- especially with three themes. 🙂
Thanks for sharing!
Love time travel story. Congrats to Tara on her story!
Ooh, this story sounds so fascinating. Looking forward to checking it and the rest of the anthology out!
False, True, True.
Sometimes the theme doesn’t show until later indeed. Time travel is always fun to play with too.
I’m so looking forward to reading the stories in this anthology. You make them sound so unique, Lee. Now, I want to know what happens. Great review.
Sounds like a fun story! I definitely don’t think time traveling would be all that great, unless I could just ‘view’ it without the fear of changing anything.

Time Travel is fascinating isn’t it? I love the quote by Hawking on Einstein’s theory.
Congrats, Tara. Reset sounds like a fascinating story.
Hi, Lee.
Hi, Cheryl-Lee! Hi Tara!
The concept of time travel has fascinated me all my life. As a boy, I voraciously read books, magazines and comics that dealt with the subject. During that same span of years I watched The Twilight Zone, Outer Limits and other science fiction television series. Naturally time travel movies also captured my imagination. These included H. G. Wells’ The Time Machine, the 1960 film based on the 1895 novella of the same name. Currently, I watch the following TV series with time travel themes: Timeless, Marvels Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., The Flash, Legends of Tomorrow and Haven. The Stephen Hawking quote boggles the mind. Tara’s story is one that is guaranteed to be of interest to anyone with an imagination. Tara – FYI, the other evening Mrs. Shady and I watched Hidden Figures for the first time, a movie that I’ll bet was of particular interest to you. 🙂
Thank you very much, Cheryl and Tara!
Nice to do this–and a great introduction to this book!
I am so looking forward to this anthology.
Echoing Alex here on the trivia front.
I love the additional info & quiz you included Lee!!
and thanks for the support & praise you guys!! this anthology is going to be a big hit!
I don’t think I go into any book with the themes already ironed out, even if I have a general idea of where I want to go. Congratulations to Tara!
Hi Lee and Tara – interesting to read more about the anthology. I’m sure I’d struggle with a theme too. Before I’d read Alex’s answers … I’d say the same F, F, T … we shall see – cheers Hilary
I’m not sure I know what the theme of my manuscript is. Guess I’ll have to go think about that 🙂
Can’t wait to read your story, Tara.
A lot of Tara’s story was really unique. She took an standard story line and made it her own.
I never see a theme until I’m done either, Tara.
I’ll try the trivia. First is false, second false, third true.
