#IWSG

Join Us Now

Every month, we announce a question that members can answer in their IWSG post. These questions may prompt you to share advice, insight, a personal experience or story. Include your answer to the question in your IWSG post or let it inspire your post if you are struggling with something to say.

Remember, the question is optional!

October 3 question - How do major life events affect your writing? Has writing ever helped you through something?

I’m skipping the question this time around. I have too much to say about this topic at the moment.

The awesome co-hosts for the October 3 posting of the IWSG are Dolorah @ Book Lover, Christopher D. Votey, Tanya Miranda, and Chemist Ken!

Have you started your story to enter it in the next Anthology Contest? I hope so. Check out this LINK to find out all of the details.

My favorite month has just arrived. If it were up to me, we’d have three months of October; then January. I’d make pumpkin pie every four weeks because, of course, I’d have to carve fresh Jack-O-Lanterns and have them at the door for the Trick-or-Treaters that would come at the end of each October. At last, I could really get some good use out of my witch hat, and I wouldn’t have to do my hair-the messier and witch+ier the better. I love orange and black together, so seeing that theme for ninety days would be just fine by me. I’d have to stock up on more apple cider and cinnamon sticks than usual, but Trader Joe’s has plenty of each. As to the ghosts and gremlins that hang out during this season, I’d use them as writing inspiration. So I think this year, I’m keeping October around until the ball drops in Times Square.

Email Connect

In my October Email Connect I tackle Honesty and how Social Media affects our Truthfulness. Do you ever think about telling a fib on, let’s say, Facebook, and then change your mind? Why? Stanford Social Media Lab has some interesting findings about the TWO ONLINE WORLDS AND TRUTH. I’ve shared that this month. I’m also featuring another of my good friends and supporters L. Diane Wolfe.

If you’re on my list, let me know what you think. If you’re not, JOIN now and get a free short story that only my mailing list will ever see. I only drop into your inbox once a month as long as you want me to.

Now, here’s an added October October October Bonus:

A HALLOWEEN GIVEAWAY

Since we’re in the ghostly-ghastly season, I thought a giveaway with a touch of horror would be in order. I’m in love with Roland Yeoman’s prose, and his amazing journeys with the literary, scientific, and political geniuses of the past. Imagine all time restrictions lifted. Imagine what kind of synergy brilliant minds from from different times can create when allowed to mingle.

I recently REVIEWED SILHOUETTES IN THE KEY OF SCREAM and Roland has generously agreed to give away 10 eBooks of that short story collection AND 10 of the companion collection, PERCHANCE TO NIGHTMARE. If you want to shiver and shake this fall, here’s your chance. To enter to win, just jump through three quick social media hoops; and then tell him which book you want when you leave a comment. Good luck.

Celebrate and Win at Evernight Teen’s 3rd Birthday Party

January 31, 2016 By C. Lee McKenzie

Visit EVERNIGHT TEEN to see all of their books.
EVERNIGHT TEEN is celebrating their anniversary this month with a 3rd Birthday Blog Hop. It’s EVERNIGHT TEEN’s birthday but we’re giving out the presents with a Grand Prize of a $100 Amazon gift certificate!
EVERNIGHT TEEN books feature fresh teen fiction that is raw, gritty and real. Whether paranormal, contemporary, sci-fi or suspense, our books are about real issues and pack a strong emotional punch. You’ll find cutting edge fiction that today’s young adults can relate to and will keep you turning the pages long into the night.

Here are some excerpts of some reviews.

By Carla Davis

I decided to give Double Negative a try because the sample dragged me in from the first paragraph until I had to read the whole thing! It’s so rare to see well done first person, but this book does it masterfully. Hutch has a real voice that must be rendered in the way the author has chosen. No lazy writing here!

By ltg584

I could tell within pages that this book was pure genius and it only became more apparent the deeper I was pulled into the story. I devoured it as quickly as I could… and now it’s over! 🙁 I wish there was some way that it could be a series, just so I could have more! I have already been perusing the author’s other works, debating over which one to read next.

By Night Owl Reviews

Double Negative is just amazing. Reading it felt like being on emotional roller-coaster.

I’m proud to be an EVERNIGHT TEEN author. Enjoy this tease from my book, Double Negative.

“My life was going, going, gone, and I hadn’t been laid yet. I couldn’t go into the slammer before that happened.” Hutch McQueen
TEASE: This is a short bit of a scene between Hutch and Fat Nyla. They’re get along most of the time, but not today. Nyla’s one of my favorite characters in this book because she’s often fragile and under attack by the “in-group” of girls, especially on a website called Mona Knows. Yet Nyla refuses to be beaten.

I see her before she sees me, but when she does, man, does she shoot lasers at me with her eyes. I walk fast and stop her at the edge of the lawn. “Look, I’m a sleaze, okay? I’m sorry, but that’s just the way I was made.”

“What do you need?”

“Nothing.” That’s pretty much the truth at the moment. By using one eye to read I’m doing more of the homework. If I hold one of them magnifying glasses over a page I can even look up words in the dictionary, so while it takes a lot of time, I can almost get through Deek’s assignments. Still I don’t want to take any chances. Nyla’s brain could be the difference between me staying a junior for a long time or making it to my senior year. I need to be on her good side.

She passes me and starts toward Larkston High.

“I said I’m sorry. Liz and me . . . well we kind of—”

“Just shut up.” She keeps walking, her eyes down.

“I came to try and—”

She wheels around so fast I run smack into her and have to back up.

“You’re a creep.” Nyla pokes me in the chest with her finger, and I back up some more. “I know what you call me. Not to my face, but when you talk about me to other kids.”
I try for one of those neutral looks, like I don’t know what she’s talking about.
“Let me refresh your memory.” She’s squared off in front of me with her hands on her hips. “Fat Nyla! That’s what you call me. That’s what Mona Knows calls me, and she got it from you.”
“Mona who?”

I don’t expect her to sock me, so when her fist comes at me I take the full wallop on the left side of my jaw. One minute I’m there with the sidewalk under my feet and the next that sidewalk is pressed against my cheek.

I’m offering two eBooks of Double Negative during Evernight Teen’s super celebration.  All you have to do is say you’d like a copy and leave your email in a comment. I’ll put your name in the “hat”.

Be sure visit each stop on the BLOG HOP for more chances to WIN the GRAND PRIZE of a $100 Amazon Gift Card. You’ll receive bonus entries for commenting on each blog!

I’ve had enough about Leap Castle and it’s dreadful history, and I’m sure my readers have as well. Ireland may be filled with ghostly places, but it’s also filled with lots of beauty and laughter. ET authors are taking time out to give their own books a SHOUT OUT and a little HORN BLOWING. Today we’re getting a bit of the Red Carpet treatment. Now I turn the spotlight on my book.
I’m short of red carpets at the moment, but I did dig up a red sheet. Shhhhh! Don’t tell.
I didn’t expect to write a Young Adult novel about a boy who can barely read, but it happened. And here’s how. I was lost inside a story and enjoying that wonderful feeling of
1) not having written it myself
2) loving the voice and excitement.
That’s when it hit me. Boink!

What if I couldn’t read?

So that was the beginning of Double Negative-a book that turned me into a LITERACY advocate. Some of you joined me my @WeWrite4U_Lit Twitter campaign in September, so you know I’m serious. If I write books, I need readers, lots of readers, and millions of people in the U.S. can’t read what I write. They can’t even read food labels.
Some Reviews:

Double Negative has done well in the review department. Here’s what two reviewers wrote. I chose two I don’t know. That only seems fair.

From AMAZON
Carla Davis, PA: I decided to give Double Negative a try because the sample dragged me in from the first paragraph until I had to read the whole thing! It’s so rare to see well done first person, but this book does it masterfully. Hutch has a real voice that must be rendered in the way the author has chosen. No lazy writing here! The characters are well-rounded and leap off of the page into your imagination. While the book has some deeply emotional moments and deals with themes and issues that could fall into oversentimentality or preachiness, the text never crosses the line. (A real feat as one of the main characters is a priest) There are real failures and victories, and Hutch’s voice carries you on through all of them in vivid prose. I was rooting for our hero and his friends for the entire book. In short, this is an excellent read for teens and adults alike, and it kept me up an hour and a half after my bedtime, so kudos to the author! Highly recommended!
From GOODREADS
Mpetbot:  Once again, C Lee McKenzie spins a tale of young adults presented with problems typical of their age — bullies, lack of self-confidence — and not so typical — dyslexia, eating disorders, and absent parents. She guides Hutch, Nyla, Wang, and Meeker to solve their problems, using their challenges as learning opportunities.
Congratulations to C Lee McKenzie for another novel where negative themes give way to positive themes — this time, of giving gratitude and letting go of hate.
******
I won’t please everyone. If I did, the book would be too middle of the road, blah! Some people won’t like the drugs. Some won’t like the poor grammar my kids use. Some won’t like my use of the name, Fat Nyla. Some won’t like mixing the story of an old woman with an incurable disease in a YA. I’m waiting for one of those reviews to come in. In the meantime, I’m glad I wrote this story, and I hope it reaches the kids I want it to reach.

*MY QUESTION: What would you miss most if you couldn’t read?

Catherine Stine’s Book Blitz!

September 29, 2014 By C. Lee McKenzie

Sugar’s not so sweet and secrets can be deadly … especially with matters of the heart.

Sienna’s bestie, Harper, warned her not to intern for famous bad boy artist, Casper Mason. After all, he just fired Harper who helped Sienna get the interview. But the moment Sienna sees Casper—or Caz—sweaty and practically shirtless and swinging from chains while he works on his sculpture, she’s hooked. He’s the richest, hottest artist in New York, and he lives in the fabulous Williamsburg Sugar Factory. But he’s also an incorrigible game-player, who seems to relish challenging Sienna’s loyalty with a string of unsettling tests.

She knows she should get away fast. But by the time Sienna sneaks into his locked storage room and begins to unearth his dark and terrifying secret, she’s fallen way too hard for the handsome, charismatic Caz.

Book reviewers are saying:

“Beautiful. Amazing. A fantastic read that left me wanting more.” -XoXo Book Blog

“A juicy read full of passion and magnetic chemistry that will have you hooked from beginning to end.” -From the Purple Matter Book Blog

Want a little TEASER? You bet. Here you are:

The death card is last. Like the queen of swords it’s reversed. As I flip through the book to interpret the card, a rush of fear crashes through me—fear for Caz. Holy shit! I don’t want to forecast his death or anything as horrendous. This card reading was a lousy idea after all. It’s bad enough we’re trapped here with no power, no lights, no heat, but the Death card, staring at us with its sunken eyes and a creepy battle-axe in its bony claws?

I release a huge sigh of relief as I skim the meaning of the reversed card. “Oh, wow, it’s good, Caz!”
“Really?” The bubble of hope in his tone catches me off-guard. He takes this seriously? If he can lie about how seriously he takes Tarot, what else can he lie about?

Kitsy Clare hails from Philly and lives in New York. A romantic at heart, she loves to write about the sexy intrigue of the city, and particularly of the art world. She knows it well, having shown her paintings here before turning to writing. The Art of Love series includes Model Position (novella) and Private Internship. Kitsy also writes YA as Catherine Stine. Her futuristic thriller, Ruby’s Fire was a YA finalist in the Next Generation Indie book awards. Fireseed One, its companion novel, was a finalist in YA and SF in the USA News International Book Awards, and an Indie Reader notable. Her YA horror, Dorianna, launches on Oct. 24 with Evernight Teen.

Small Things to Celebrate, UncommonYA Valentine’s Day Giveaway &Hint #4 On Writing Sequels

February 14, 2014 By C. Lee McKenzie

VIKLIT

I’m celebrating Valentine’s Day. AND a GIVEAWAY. Here’s some treats for you.

We all love a good book. Read on to see which ones the Uncommon YA authors love!

One of my favorite books is Perfect Chemistry by Simon Elkeles. I love the way she hits real topics head on with characters that are strong and tenacious. As a bonus: this author can write a seriously hot hook up scene *fans face* ;) Julie Anne Lindsey

I love The Bronze Horseman by Paullina Simons and have my fingers crossed the movie producers accept the script she is working on to turn it into a movie. I also love Where is the green sheep by Mem Fox because my kids and I have read it a billion times together and we know it off by heart.

Melissa Wray

One of my favorite stories is Pale Horse, Pale Rider by Katherine Anne Porter. First published in
1939, the short novel portrays a young couple falling in love during the end of World War I and the onset of the Spanish Influenza. The main character falls ill with the deadly flu, and her new boyfriend, a recently enlisted soldier, finds her medical help right before he must leave for training. It’s a beautifully written snapshot of life during those uncertain times.

Yvonne Ventresca

My favorite, most life-impacting book with respect to becoming an author is Staying Fat for Sarah Byrnes, by Chris Crutcher. I was in the early days of recovery from childhood sexual abuse, and I was looking for something to read while working out on the treadmill. I went into my daughter’s room and found Staying Fat for Sarah Byrnes on her bookshelf. I had no idea what it was about or who Chris Crutcher was- but as I walked on the treadmill, it was as if walls inside of me fell away and I realized that I had stories inside of me that might touch others as this book was impacting me. I was thrilled last year to get to meet Chris and talk with him. Beth Fehlbaum

I book I really love right now is Jeff Vandermeer’s Wonderbook. It’s given me some really great insights on revision-and it’s pretty to look at too 🙂 Natalie Zaman

Here’s a book I love: Bridge to Terebithia by Katherine Paterson for it’s themes of friendship and dreaming big. It’s a lovely, simple little book that says powerful things. Lisa Cresswell

Divergent by Veronica Roth: Beautiful writing made for a fast-paced read in a fascinating dystopian setting with a strong female lead. It’s one of those rare books for me where I loved the story as much as the writing and it stayed with me long after I read the last word.

Today I want to introduce Crystal Collier’s debut novel, Moonless. We’re going to play the Truth or Lie game, and you have a chance to win her book!
Alexia’s nightmares become reality: a dead baron, red-eyed wraiths, and forbidden love with a man hunted by these creatures. After an attack close to home, Alexia realizes she cannot keep one foot in her old life and one in this new world. To protect her family she must either be sold into a loveless marriage, or escape with her beloved and risk becoming one of the Soulless.

MOONLESS is Jane Eyre meets Supernatural.
“MOONLESS is powerful, compelling, and packed with soul.” -Bethany Kaczmarek, editor at A Little Red, Inc.
“I fell head
over heels for the characters. The story itself was magnificent and the way
Crystal writes is beyond that.” -TC Mckee, acquiring editor at BookFish Books
“The mystery is dense and pulsating… Power-packed action, heart stopping mystery, unpredictable twists and turns…” -Review on I Am a Reader Not a Writer

Buy MOONLESS HERE or add it on Goodreads.
Crystal gave me two truths and one lie to test your “lie detector” skills. Can you figure out the lie? Those who do will be entered in a random drawing to win one of three ebooks of MOONLESS. Monday Miscellany Featuring Nancy LaRonda Johnson & How to Make Your Social Media Work Harder for You

August 5, 2013 By C. Lee McKenzie

Salted With Fire:

Nancy LaRonda Johnson says,

Black magic, murder, insanity, humor, honor and devotion. Salted With Fire is a journey of flash fiction and poetry that shows my writing transformation from worldly to wanting to please God.

Flash fiction is my passion; poetry is my release. I love creating a complete story, with a beginning, middle and end, with twists, humor, drama, compassion and horror, all under 1000 words. Salted With Fireisn’t just a book of stories and poetry, it is my journey as a writer, from writing only for the mere joy of it regardless of the message, to writing stories that highlight God’s will for people, even if the stories themselves are not religious in nature.

Inside are fifteen flash fiction pieces and twelve poems with full-color pictures, and short Biblical discussions after each story.

How to Make Twitter More Effective-If That’s Possible

Promoting your books and having them noticed is a hard job when you’re in a sea of writers doing it too. But there are some things you can do to make that job a bit easier and more effective. Let’s tackle that wonderous 140 character beastie, Twitter.

1) Give your Twitter page some “bling.” By that I mean put wallpaper up for your background. Use any image that expresses your brand.

2) Find some people to follow that are recognized in the business. If they use hashtags, you should use the ones they use.

3) I’ve posted this before, but maybe it’s worth repeating. Clean up your Twitter Follower list once in a while. If people aren’t following you, it’s better to unfollow and find new people who are interested in what you have to say in those 140 characters. Here’s the LINK to that clean-up site.

4) I’m scheduling my Tweets now, so I can plan a few days ahead for what I want to put out about my blog or my events. It’s easy to schedule 2 in the morning and 2 in the late afternoon. The one problem: I have to reload the Tweedeck page a lot. For some reason the scheduling drop down freezes on me. If you know why that happens, let us know.

5) Keep your Tweets short so it’s easy for others to RT and lose some of your message.

Here’s someone who knows more about this than I do ( or care to).

THE LONELIEST PLANET

Is Twitter worth the effort? Any data that says it helps you become more visible to the world of readers? Have you entered to win Nancy’s book?
